UWI Seismic Research Centre Issues Preliminary Report

The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC) has reported that a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at 8:41 p.m. local time (00:41 UTC on May 12).

According to automatic calculations from the SRC, the earthquake’s epicenter was located at latitude 10.96°N and longitude 62.23°W, with a depth of approximately 31 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface.

Proximity to Major Cities:

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – 86 km northwest of the epicenter

Arima, Trinidad and Tobago – 111 km west-northwest

Carúpano, Venezuela – 115 km east-northeast

This event was automatically located by SRC’s computerized monitoring systems and is subject to further review and potential revision by SRC analysts.

At this time, there have been no reports of damage or injuries, but residents across parts of Trinidad and nearby areas may have felt the tremor.
