Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has stated that she lacks the legal authority to reverse the salary increases implemented by the Salaries Review Commission (SRC). Speaking at a post-Cabinet media briefing at the Red House in Port of Spain, she explained that, based on legal advice, the government cannot unilaterally revert to previous salary structures.
Attorney General John Jeremie elaborated, noting that the SRC’s recommendations encompass various public service roles, including judges and permanent secretaries, making it challenging to selectively amend the adjustments. Political analyst Dr. Indira RamperĀsad commented that overturning the salary hikes might necessitate judicial intervention. She highlighted that the previous administration’s decision to implement the increases without parliamentary approval complicates efforts to rescind them. Dr. RamperĀsad emphasized that addressing the issue through the courts could be the most viable path forward, especially since the increases affect multiple groups, including the judiciary.
The Salaries Review Commission (SRC) recently approved a series of salary increases for high-ranking public officials, including government ministers, judges, permanent secretaries, and heads of statutory bodies. These adjustments, which were implemented by the previous administration, have drawn public criticism amid economic concerns. The increases, in some cases, amount to over 20% and were introduced without direct parliamentary approval, sparking debates about transparency, fairness, and fiscal responsibility.
