Watching the Mosquito Block Party video from Stockholm, Sweden, one thing immediately stood out to me: not only was Soca music playing, but it was Old School Soca! What makes this even more remarkable is the choice of track—Uncle Crazy’s 1994 hit “Opp In De Party.”
Now, if this song were played in Trinidad or most parts of the Caribbean, many patrons would likely roll their eyes, criticize the DJ, and dismiss the track as outdated.
But here, in a country where Soca isn’t a mainstream genre, the crowd is absolutely loving it! The enthusiasm and joy on their faces as they embrace this classic tune is a reminder of how much people outside the Caribbean value what we sometimes take for granted—our music and culture.
A huge shoutout to @djerykahg and @thomasmosquito for consistently representing Soca and Calypso in Sweden. Your efforts to bring a piece of Caribbean culture to the world don’t go unnoticed. We truly appreciate you both for spreading the Soca love across the globe! 💝🙏🏿💯🔥
